Benefits of Camp: Belonging
At YMCA Xamp West Mar, we empower youth to achieve through skill development, strengthen relationships by cultivating strong character and create a sense of belonging through shared outdoor experiences. This vision is what aligns staff and campers in their personal development.
What does all of this mean? let’s break this down…
1. Achieve through skill development
Skill development at camp happens when campers engage in new activities and focus on improving their abilities to succeed. For example, when a parent asks what a camper did, the camper might proudly share a moment of success, like hitting the bullseye in archery. This process allows campers to build confidence as they develop and refine their skills through hands-on experiences.
2. Strengthen relationships by cultivating strong character
Character development is strengthened when campers step outside their comfort zones in a safe environment, such as offering to clear the table and load the dishwasher after dinner without being asked. Acts of caring and helpfulness help build confidence and self-worth, as campers succeed in overcoming fears or discomforts. These experiences enhance their social skills, fostering stronger relationships and improving their ability to relate to others.
3. Create a sense of belonging through shared outdoor experiences
Think back to your childhood – what is your strongest memory? Does it involve a family member or friend? If the person or people who shared those experiences were taken from that memory, would it still hold the same value for you? Our connections and relationships with others are what give value to our experiences. It is this sense of belonging that tugs at our hearts when we reminisce.
Camp has always been designed to bring youth of varying ages, abilities and backgrounds together in a safe place to achieve, connect, and belong. At YMCA Camp West Mar, we will continue to honor this tradition through our vision, goals and core values.
