Benefits of Camp: Belonging

At YMCA Camp West Mar, we empower youth to achieve through skill development, strengthen relationships by cultivating strong character and create a sense of belonging through shared outdoor experiences. This vision is what aligns staff and campers in their personal development.

What does all of this mean? let’s break this down…

1. Achieve through skill development

Skill development at camp happens when campers engage in new activities and focus on improving their abilities to succeed. For example, when a parent asks what a camper did, the camper might proudly share a moment of success, like hitting the bullseye in archery. This process allows campers to build confidence as they develop and refine their skills through hands-on experiences.

2. Strengthen relationships by building strong character

Character is built when a camper steps outside of their comfort zone in a safe environment, succeeds at something they had fear or discomfort around, and are recognized for that act. The camper experiences increased confidence and self-worth, improving their social skills and ability to relate to others. You notice character at home when your camper offers to clear the table and load the dishwasher after dinner without being asked, demonstrating caring and helpfulness.

3. Create a sense of belonging through shared outdoor experiences

Participating in a large group activities, songs during daily announcements, all camp games or winning the weekly spirit stick award gives campers a sense of belonging to the camp community. Belonging is what a camper feels when they thing back on their memories and experiences at camp.

Think back to your childhood – what is your strongest memory? Does it involve a family member or friend? If the person or people who shared those experiences were taken from that memory, would it still hold the same value for you? Our connections and relationships with others are what give value to our experiences. It is this sense of belonging that tugs at our hearts when we reminisce.

Camp has always been designed to bring youth of varying ages, abilities and backgrounds together in a safe place to achieve, connect, and belong. At YMCA Camp West Mar, we will continue to honor this tradition through our vision, goals and core values.
