Overcoming a Life-Changing Diagnosis: Hugh Smith’s Fitness Journey
YMCA member Hugh Smith’s life took an unexpected turn last year, when he was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. This serious condition restricts blood flow in the lungs, causing chronic health issues and increased risk of heart failure. Hugh knew that exercise would help reduce the strain on his heart. Fortunately, the YMCA provided just what he needed.
“I grew up in Florida, where everyone swims,” he says. “When the Natelli Family Y finally opened, it was a Godsend! Now, I try to swim laps every 4-5 days.” Since joining the Y, Hugh has noticed improvements in his physical health. Hugh shares, “I’m convinced the breathing in swimming has helped my condition.”
At the Y, Hugh has discovered a whole new world of fitness opportunities to stay healthy and strong. He says, “I’m trying new things like senior yoga and light aerobics. The stretching of muscle groups and yoga poses helps keep me flexible, and I think the exercise releases those endorphins that make a person feel high and happy. I know it works for me!”
Joining the Y has given Hugh more than just a boost for his heart wellness—he’s discovered a whole new circle of friends who share his commitment to staying active and healthy. “I’m seeing some of the same folks at our classes,” he says, “and we have a connection. We all want to stay active as we grow older, and the physical activity improves our overall wellbeing. I didn’t have this before joining the Y, and I enjoy taking advantage of the opportunities.”
Hugh also enjoys attending “Lunch and Learn” sessions, offered through the Y’s Active Older Adult program. In these lunchtime gatherings, experts from YMCA partners like Frederick Health, the Arthritis Foundation, and Weis Markets lead discussions on a range of health and wellness topics—from managing arthritis and improving heart and lung health to healthy eating and hands-on cooking classes.
One “Lunch and Learn” in particular stands out for Hugh; a talk on cardiology by Dr. Maurice Smith. “He’s a chest surgeon in Frederick who had done a procedure in my heart,” Hugh says. “Knowing what a fine doctor he was, I wanted to attend and meet him again. I’ll always remember him, because right before my procedure, he came in and prayed with me. I reminded him how special that was.”
Through swimming, working out, and connecting with others at the Y, Hugh has found new ways to manage his heart health and remain active year-round. The Y’s range of fitness, educational, and wellness offerings have become a vital part of his routine, supporting his physical and social well-being.
Reflecting on his journey, Hugh shares, “I feel my overall health has improved with the activities I do at the Y, and I’m grateful for it!
