Why Working Part-Time for the YMCA’s BASE Program is a Great Option
Meet Jim Starcher
If you’re looking for part-time work that offers flexibility, meaningful experiences, and the chance to make a positive impact, look no further than the YMCA’s Before and After School Enrichment (BASE) program. Jim Starcher, a long-time YMCA team member, shares his story and why working for the YMCA has been such a rewarding experience.
A Flexible and Meaningful Role
Jim has been with the YMCA since 1998, currently serving as a teacher in the BASE program. He works part-time, substituting at various schools wherever he’s needed. What makes this role ideal for Jim is the YMCA’s flexibility, allowing him to balance his full-time job while contributing to a program he loves.
“The Y really works with my schedule. They help me slide in and work when I can, and it’s great knowing they can count on me,” he says.
The Joy of Working with Kids
Jim was initially drawn to the YMCA because of his desire to be a positive role model for school-aged children. Over the years, this passion has only grown as he’s witnessed the long-term impact of his work.
“One of the most rewarding parts of my role is seeing students grow and change into young adults. I’ve had students come back to tell me how they’re doing or even ask me for recommendations to work for the YMCA themselves,” he shares.
Jim’s work has also built strong relationships with families in the community. “I often see parents out in the community who thank me for what I’ve done. Knowing I’ve had a positive influence on their children is incredibly fulfilling.”
Personal and Professional Growth at the Y
Working for the YMCA has offered Jim opportunities to grow, both professionally and personally. Through his role, he’s gained skills like first aid and CPR and developed a deeper understanding of how to work effectively with children.
“There have even been times when I’ve been asked to advance my position and become a director,” he says, highlighting how the YMCA supports growth for those looking to expand their careers.
A Caring Culture with Strong Values
For Jim, the YMCA isn’t just a workplace—it’s a community. Over his decades of service, he’s built strong connections with his colleagues and witnessed the YMCA’s values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility lived out daily.
“It’s a very caring atmosphere. Knowing that we’re there to look out for the best interests of the kids, who come from all backgrounds, is great,” Jim reflects.
Advice for Future Team Members
When asked what he would say to someone considering a job with the YMCA, Jim doesn’t hesitate:
“It’s a great job if you like working with kids,” he says.
With flexible schedules, meaningful opportunities, and the chance to make a lasting difference, the YMCA’s BASE program is a perfect fit for people like Jim who are passionate about youth development.
