Inspiring Change
Emily Kerns’ Leadership Journey at the YMCA
Emily Kerns, a senior at Oakdale High School, has been an active participant in the YMCA Youth & Government program for three years. She began her journey in Florida’s Youth in Government program and is now part of the Maryland program, where she serves as the Head Social Media Officer.
Recently, Emily had the unique opportunity to attend the Changemakers Summit for the second time. The Changemakers Summit brings together Leaders Club and Youth & Government members from across the country to inspire and equip young leaders to create positive change in their communities.
This year, Emily took on the role of Squad Leader, working with three peers from different states to foster a dynamic and inclusive environment for their group. Together, they ensured that students gained the most from this transformative experience. Attendees participated in various labs and leadership development sessions, exploring civics on both local and global scales. Emily also connected with people from across the nation, sharing Y stories and learning about new opportunities to get involved with the YMCA.
One of the highlights of the Summit was the Squad Games, which combined athletic and mental challenges designed to promote teamwork and communication. Emily’s squad emerged as champions, an achievement that brought pride and unity to her group.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Summit was a meaningful experience for Emily, filled with new friendships and reunions with old friends from her time in Florida Youth & Government. She highly recommends the Changemakers Summit to anyone with the opportunity to attend, calling it both inspiring and enjoyable while helping participants build critical social and emotional skills.
Emily’s commitment to leadership, community involvement, and personal growth exemplifies the values of the YMCA and the impact of programs like Youth & Government.
