As grocery prices rise and recent changes to SNAP benefits make it harder for many adults—including older adults, veterans, and unhoused individuals—to access support, the need for affordable, healthy food is greater than ever. With states facing stricter rules and fewer people qualifying for assistance, the YMCA of Frederick County’s Community Produce Market plays a vital role in ensuring that everyone has access to fresh, nourishing food whether they qualify for SNAP or not.
The Community Produce Market, held every Wednesday from 3-6 pm at the Y Teaching Kitchen/Bernard Brown Community Center at 629 N Market St, Frederick, provides fresh (including organic) produce for only $1-$3. This is a significant discount from grocery stores and is possible thanks to our partnership with Hungry Harvest which rescues farm-fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. But SNAP recipients don’t pay a dime. Thanks to donations and grants, the YMCA of Frederick County has been providing SNAP recipients up to $10 worth of free food each week.
In the past year alone, we’ve distributed over 70,000 pounds of food and have helped nourish more than 170 individuals and families each week in Frederick County.
“During Hunger Action Month, we’re reminded that food insecurity is an unfortunate circumstance that many people in our community face each and every day,” said Tracey Hill, VP of Human Resources at the Y. “Through our Community Produce Market and through the dedication of our staff and volunteers, we are committed to ensuring every person in Frederick County has access to healthy fruits and vegetables all year long.”
This September, you can make a difference. As an example, a gift of just $5 could purchase a bunch of spinach, two bell peppers, five organic plums and two avocadoes. A gift of $10 helps provide a week’s worth of fresh fruits and vegetables for an individual. A gift of $20 can provide enough produce for an entire family to eat healthy for a week.
