Downtown Y Locker Room Renovation
We are excited to announce the upcoming renovation of our Downtown Y youth locker rooms into a new universal locker room. This renovation is part of our ongoing commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces for all members. Construction will begin on November 11 and is expected to take approximately 4 months.
The family-friendly Universal Locker Room:
Once the renovation is complete, the new locker room will feature:
- 9 private changing suites (shower, sink, toilet)
- 23 private dry changing stalls
- A Caregiver’s Room featuring a sink and an adult-sized changing table
- A restroom on the pool deck for added convenience
Temporary Locker Room Arrangements:
- For the first three months of the renovation, youth can use the four individual changing rooms or the adult locker rooms
- For one month, the last month of the renovation, only the adult locker rooms will be available and youth will have to use the adult locker rooms. We kindly remind all adult members that children will be present, and we ask everyone to practice modesty and respect during this time to ensure a comfortable environment for all. Both adult locker rooms are ADA-compliant.
- For the entire renovation,
- Youth ages 6 and above may enter the adult locker room on their own, while children under 6 must enter with a parent or guardian (using the locker room of the adult’s gender).
- We recommend that swim team members and, as much as possible, swim lesson participants arrive dressed and ready to swim and plan to change at home after their activities to help reduce congestion in the available spaces.
- Throughout the renovation period, staff members will conduct regular rounds in the locker rooms to ensure compliance with safety and modesty standards. The locker room doors will continue to be coded, with no changes. Parents / Program participants / Youth 6 and older can ask the front desk staff for the code.
- Those wanting to enter the pool but not needing the locker room can use the pool deck door by knocking. Please remember no street shoes will be allowed on the pool deck.
Funding for this renovation came through a state grant and capital funding from the YMCA of Frederick County.
As of now, tentatively, the Downtown Y Aquatic Center, as well as the co-ed sauna and steam room, will be closed from December 22-January 4, partly for the construction and for our annual drainage, maintenance, and cleaning.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this transition, and we look forward to providing you with an enhanced facility that benefits all our members!
