Unlocking Hope and Health: Pedaling for Parkinson’s at YMCA of Frederick County
April marks Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time dedicated to spreading knowledge, raising awareness, and advocating for those affected by Parkinson’s disease. At the YMCA of Frederick County, we stand united with the Parkinson’s community, offering a beacon of hope and a path to better living through our transformative program: Pedaling for Parkinson’s.
Pedaling for Parkinson’s:
Pedaling for Parkinson’s is more than just a cycling program; it’s a lifeline for individuals battling Parkinson’s disease and their dedicated caregivers. This innovative initiative, championed by the YMCA of Frederick County, harnesses the power of regular exercise to alleviate symptoms and enhance the quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s.
Research conducted at esteemed institutions like the Cleveland Clinic has underscored the profound impact of cycling on Parkinson’s symptoms. A staggering 35 percent reduction in symptoms was observed through the simple act of pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace. This isn’t a cure, but it’s a tangible step forward in managing the challenges posed by Parkinson’s disease.
The Pedaling for Parkinson’s Mission:
Our mission with Pedaling for Parkinson’s is threefold:

- Supporting Research: We stand at the forefront of supporting research dedicated to preventing and treating Parkinson’s disease. By advocating for advancements in medical science, we pave the way for a brighter future.

Participant Testimonial:
Lou, a valued member of our Pedaling for Parkinson’s community, shares his journey:
“Parkinson’s Disease is a progressively debilitating disease that can be slowed down through exercise. The Pedaling for Parkinson’s Class gives me a fun place to exercise with friends who also have PD. The positive impact from this class lasts for several days after each class. I’ve had PD for 14 years. I appreciate being part of the Pedaling for Parkinson’s Class as I strive to slow down this disease.”
