On June 6, the YMCA of Frederick County will join Ys across the country and around the world in celebrating YMCA Founder’s Day, marking 182 years since the founding of the YMCA movement in London in 1844.
The YMCA was created to give young people a safe place to grow in spirit, mind, and body – and that mission lives on today at the YMCA of Frederick County, where the Y serves thousands of people every year through programs that strengthen the community, promote healthy living, support youth development, and foster social responsibility.
A Local Legacy of Impact
The YMCA of Frederick County first opened its doors in 1858, and has been serving Frederick County ever since. Over the decades, the Y has launched countless programs and initiatives – from swim lessons and summer camps to food assistance, afterschool care, and community wellness.
“The YMCA has always been a place where everyone belongs,” said Lisa Koen, VP of Healthy Living. “On Founder’s Day, we honor the generations of staff, volunteers, members, and donors who have made this possible, and we look forward to continuing this legacy together.”
Celebrate and Get Involved
As part of YMCA Founder’s Day, the YMCA of Frederick County invites community members to share their Y stories on social media and join the celebration by getting involved – whether through volunteering, donating, or participating in programs.
