Drama at the YMCA of Frederick County invites youth to explore storytelling, movement, and character in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Guided by caring instructors, participants build confidence, teamwork, and communication skills while having fun on and off the stage. Whether they’re brand new to drama or already love the spotlight, every child is encouraged to try, experiment, and grow. Families will find a welcoming space where creativity is celebrated and every voice matters.

Our drama programs are designed to develop the whole person—spirit, mind, and body—through creative expression. Participants learn how to collaborate, listen, and problem-solve while discovering their own strengths and talents. With a focus on belonging and encouragement, we create a space where every child feels safe to take risks, try something new, and shine.

Onstage practice leads to offstage confidence. Through acting games, improvisation, and scene work, participants build communication skills, empathy, and resilience. They learn how to speak clearly, work as part of an ensemble, and support their peers. These experiences help youth feel more prepared for school presentations, social situations, and future opportunities—far beyond the final bow.

At the YMCA of Frederick County, we welcome youth with diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities into our drama programs. Instructors use age-appropriate activities and flexible teaching methods to help each participant feel supported. We focus on encouragement over perfection, giving every child the chance to participate in ways that feel comfortable for them. Families are encouraged to share any specific needs so we can partner together to create a positive experience for their child.

Drama offerings are typically grouped by age so activities are developmentally appropriate. Programs may include options for younger children, school-age youth, and teens. Check current listings for specific age ranges each session.
No experience is required. Our instructors design classes to welcome beginners and those with prior experience. Activities focus on exploration, teamwork, and growth, so every participant can learn at their own pace.
Comfortable clothing that allows free movement and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Your child may also want a water bottle. Any additional items—like scripts or props—will be provided or communicated by the instructor.
Non-members are often welcome to join drama programs at a different rate, while members typically receive discounted pricing. Please refer to the current program guide or contact the Y for details on member and non-member rates.
