What should I expect during my first lesson?
Your instructor will ask for proof of payment prior to the start of each new lesson block. If proof of payment is not provided, the instructor will not be able to begin the lesson. Your instructor will then take some time to talk to you about your goals and reasons for taking private lessons, and spend some time evaluating your existing skills in the water, then begin the instruction portion of your lesson.
What happens if we're late or miss a lesson?
Lessons will end at their scheduled time regardless of late arrivals. Lessons may be re-scheduled as long as 24 hours’ notice is provided. In the event of a sudden illness or major emergency, please provide as much notice as possible. If appropriate notice is not provided, the student will forfeit the lesson. Lessons will resume the following week. Please make every effort to avoid re-scheduling more than twice per block.
Do I need to be present for my child's lesson?
Children under the age of 9 must have a designated parent/guardian or adult chaperone on the pool deck with them at all times, including during private lessons.
Can I/my child use the pool before or after my lesson?
Oftentimes the pool is reserved exclusively for registered programs; in this case, swimmers must wait for their lesson to start before entering the pool.
If the schedule indicates “Open Rec”, YMCA members of any age may utilize the pool for free play. Children who are non-swimmers or weaker swimmers must be accompanied in the water by an adult in swimming attire at all times. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to swim test any child for competency at any time when they are in the pool.
If the schedule indicates “Adult Lap” YMCA members ages 16 and older may utilize the pool for independent lap swim.
How do I set up my next block of lessons?
During your last private lesson, please inform your instructor of whether or not you would like to continue lessons. If we do not hear from you by then, your lesson slot will be offered to wait-listed participants.
If this timeline is followed, there is often no delay and lessons can continue the very next week. Occasionally pool or instructor availability will change and lessons may need to be re-scheduled.
How long are my lessons good for?
Private lesson funds expire 6 months after date of payment.
What do I do if I have more questions?
Questions or concerns can be directed to the instructor at any point during the lesson, but please allow the instructor to conduct the lesson with minimal outside interruption. Please keep in mind that many instructors may need to go from one lesson directly into another and may ask you to follow up via email or phone for longer conversations.
