Swim Lessons

We use a variety of fun methods to help kids overcome fears, build confidence in the water and develop skills that last a lifetime

swim-lessons-ymcaAt the Y, we believe the ability to swim is an important life skill for everyone!  Swimming develops the whole person: spirit, mind, and body. In swim lessons, we use a combination of fun methods to help kids overcome fears, build confidence in the water and develop skills that last a lifetime. Qualified instructors meet swimmers at their own level and celebrate all successes. Trained instructors emphasize personal safety, swimming skills, endurance, and social skills, while guiding students with praise and encouragement.

All Pre-school, School Age, and Teen swimmers who are new to taking lessons at the YMCA of Frederick County (or those who have taken a break and do not have an approval for their new program stage) must be evaluated before enrolling in group lessons. Exception: Children who will register for Parent/Child or Water Acclimation do not need to be evaluated.

To schedule an evaluation, please use our online Swim Evaluation Request Form.

The YMCA of Frederick County Aquatics Programs offers program updates through the Remind App and our Facebook Group. If using the Remind App, please refer to this guide to help you sign up for the correct notifications.

The YMCA of Frederick County is a Local Partner with the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make A Splash initiative.MakeaSplash

The USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash initiative is a national child-focused water safety campaign, which aims to provide the opportunity for every child in America to learn to swim. Through Make a Splash, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with learn-to-swim providers and water safety advocates across the country to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim. The USA Swimming Foundation has invested millions of dollars to provide grants to qualified Local Partner learn-to-swim programs, to spread national awareness, and to bring together strategic partners to end drowning.  To date, more than 6 million children have received the lifesaving gift of swim lessons through the USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash Local Partner network, comprised of more than 850 qualified lesson providers across the nation.
