Honoring the Life and Legacy of
Martin Luther King, Jr. Through His Words

As we approach Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we are reminded of the profound impact one person can have when driven by purpose, courage, and a commitment to community. This holiday is not just a time for reflection but an opportunity for action—a call to live out Dr. King’s vision through service and kindness in our daily lives.

At the YMCA of Frederick County, we embody Dr. King’s dream every day by fostering a sense of belonging, equity, and shared responsibility. Whether you are greeting a new member with a warm smile, ensuring children have a safe and nurturing space to grow, or providing critical resources to those in need, your work strengthens our community and inspires hope.

Dr. King famously asked, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Each of you answers this question in unique and impactful ways. From supporting families through childcare and mentoring programs to helping seniors find connection and joy, you embody the spirit of service that Dr. King championed.

As Dr. King said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”

At the Y, we create a space where differences are celebrated, and common ground is found. I encourage you to continue welcoming others, fostering understanding, and building bridges across our diverse community. Together, we can ensure that everyone feels valued and supported.

Dr. King also reminded us that, “Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”

Your dedication to nurturing the potential of every child and teen is an investment in our future. Whether you’re teaching new skills, providing encouragement, or being a role model, your efforts shape the leaders of tomorrow.

This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I invite you to take time for personal reflection and to consider how you can continue to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Whether through your daily work, volunteering, or engaging with your neighbors, know that your actions contribute to a stronger, more compassionate Frederick community.

Thank you for all you do to carry forward the ideals of service, equality, and unity. I am deeply proud to stand beside you in this work.
