Our PurposeMission & History
Strengthening Community for Over 165 Years
At the YMCA of Frederick County, our mission is simple yet powerful: to build and maintain a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Since 1858, we have been a place where people of every age, background, and ability come together to learn, grow, and belong. What began as a small group gathered in borrowed rooms has grown into a dynamic, county-wide movement serving families, youth, and adults through programs that inspire connection and support well-being. Today, we continue our longstanding commitment to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility—while evolving to meet the needs of a changing community.

Our Mission
Our mission — to build and maintain a healthy spirit, mind and body for all — guides every program and service we offer. We believe that everyone should have access to opportunities that help them thrive. Through inclusive programs, financial assistance, and community partnerships, we work to strengthen families, support youth, and create spaces where all people feel welcome and valued. The YMCA remains a trusted community anchor dedicated to meeting emerging needs with compassion and determination.
