In order to help support our Head Start families, we showed the movie “Inside Out” on the big screen under the stars on the YMCA soccer field. 26 families came out to join us on a mild October evening.
Many families started off their evening by traveling on our yellow schools bus, as we also provided transportation for those who needed it. Moms, dads, grandparents, preschoolers and their older siblings joined our staff for a fun filled night which of course included freshly popped popcorn.
The movie was selected to showcase the importance of social emotional health. Social and emotional development has been identified as one of the key factors in children’s long term academic and life success. These skills include regulating their emotions, problem solving, and getting along with others. Early life experiences help children identify their emotions and develop strategies in order to deal with both positive and negative situations.
Families were also provided with ReadyAtFive (www.readyatfive.org ) parent flyers, reinforcing social emotional activities that parents, children’s first teachers, can do at home.
