Did you know….
1 out of 3 adults has Prediabetes. Prediabetes is treatable, but only about 10 percent of adults who have it are aware that they do. Left untreated up to one-third of adults with prediabetes will progress to diabetes within five years.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles to reduce their chances of developing the disease. The program is based on research funded by the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) which showed that by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a small amount of weight, programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58% overall and 71% in adults age 60 and over. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program uses CDC-approved curriculum and is part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program. In a group setting, a trained lifestyle coach helps participants change their lifestyle by learning about healthy eating, physical activity and other behavior changes over the course of 25 one-hour sessions.
We are currently enrolling participants and seeking referrals. The class will begin October 27, 2018 and held at the Y teaching kitchen on Saturday’s from10:00am-11:00am
