Charitable Giving and YMCA Child Care

Did you know that the Frederick County YMCA is the largest child care provider in Frederick County?  We offer before and after school care at 27 elementary schools in the county; we also have two pre-school sites for care for infants up to school age children.  At these locations, we currently provide care for about 1200 children.

Childcare costs represent a significant part of a family’s household budget, and the lack of stable child care can impact the ability of a working parent to maintain their family’s source of income.  The Y’s childcare program addresses these issues, providing care at a reasonable cost and on a reliable basis.  George Guevara, Executive Director of Child Care, notes “Families are under a lot of stress these days.  The YMCA of Frederick County offers a safe place for children before and after school, where a healthy snack and assistance with homework is provided.  We help the kids make good choices, keep them active and allow time at home after care to be ‘family time’.   Our programs encourage stronger families and healthy children.”

Part of the Y’s mission is to make its programs affordable for everyone; in the childcare area, this result is scholarship assistance for child care for approximately 10% of the children enrolled.  The source of these funds comes from many places; primary funding comes from the Annual Campaign and from the earnings of the endowment fund.  These earnings are an ongoing source of funding that enable family’s access to quality child care.

Our Y’s Endowment Fund ensures the long-term financial strength of our Y, while providing vital income annually for childcare tuition assistance.  Through cash gifts or planned gifts, individuals are enabling the Y to fulfill its commitment to the community – that no individual is turned away from the Y for inability to pay.  Recognition for donors as a member of the Heritage Club or the Legacy Society recognizes individuals who contribute to our endowment, ensuring that quality child care is available to all children in Frederick County.
