The Downtown Y offers Karate classes, from beginner to advanced level, for young children, youth, teens and adults. We teach our classes in 7-week sessions, because Learning Karate, self-discipline and self-defense doesn’t have to be expensive. Please click below to view our current program guide.
Our classes are provided in a safe, ethical, and traditional environment that cater to all levels of experience. Y Karate classes focus on a variety of skills and areas of personal growth, such as self-defense, self-confidence, personal discipline, respect for others and physical conditioning. Every class has a minimum of one instructor per sixteen students so each student receives focused instruction by their senior instructors. New beginner classes start every session and parents are free to participate the first session with their child. Feel free to come by the Y Warehouse on Monday and Wednesday from 5-6 pm to watch or join in!
Our Karate classes are taught in the Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu technique, an old style Okinawan Kenpo art that differs from other Karate school techniques in that the emphasis is not on competition and trophies, but rather on self defense and personal growth. This is a completely systematized method of learning for children and adults, honoring both the culture from which it originates and it’s master: pioneer, author, and world renown martial arts expert, Sensei Patrick McCarthy.
Koryu Uchinadi is a modern interpretation of Okinawa’s historic fighting art and has an application based curriculum that employs a broad range of techniques including kicking, punching, throws, chokes, joint locks, escapes, grappling and pressure point manipulation performed both as solo exercises and in functional two person drills.
Martial Arts (Ages 6-Adult)
Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do: Tae Kwon Do is the art of kicking and punching. Students will be taught various forms of blocks, stances, strikes, foot work, kicks, and traditional Kata. This style embraces a very old and traditional approach to Tae Kwon Do and mandates Power, Focus, Speed, and Spirit in a very safe and positive environment.
Vee Jitsu Ryu Jiu-Jitsu: It is considered a “system of systems” in that it embarks on a very practical approach to self-defense. The system is a culmination of several forms of martial arts. Therefore, the students are taught rolls, falls, joint manipulations, wrist locks, various throws, self-defense techniques, foot work, and the movement of the Arnis sticks both with and without the weapon in a safe, fun, and encouraging environment.
Parents are invited to come and watch or join!
