Senior Self Defense

Springtime Fun For Seniors – Personal Self-Defense Tactics

Want to feel safer on the street? Or in a parking garage at night? Capt. Kirby Lee Maybush, a 45-year veteran of law enforcement, not retired from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, will teach us the basic common sense rules of how to protect ourselves before, during, and after an attack. Capt. Maybush has taught self-defense tactics at police and military academies and made numerous appearances on TV and radio. Statistics show that educated people are best equipped to protect themselves. Don’t miss this opportunity to get “street smart.” Lunch catered by Panera.

Seniors Wintertime Fun – Holiday Potluck Bingo

Instead of heading to the donation bin, wrap up that white elephant you’re tired of looking at and bring it to our Holiday Bingo.  Who knows, your cast-off could become someone else’s prize possession. For our Potluck lunch, bring a side dish or dessert to share.  The Y will provide the main course — and the Bingo caller.  Good Luck!

Seniors Wintertime Fun – Tales of Maryland Old-Time Currency

Past meets future in the person of Dr. Ken Potocki, a retired space scientist with an avid interest in the people and history of our country.  He will take us on a journey through 19th Century Maryland using the stories embedded in old US bank notes and intrigue us with tales of wildcat banking practices in the 1800s.

As a SPECIAL BONUS, Dr. Potocki will also bring us up to date on what’s happening these days at NASA.  During his long career, he managed numerous programs being operated for NASA by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, among them the Hopkins Telescope, now on permanent display at the Air & Space Museum.  He also managed the start of the Parker Solar Probe Mission to the Sun that launched this past August.

Healthy Kids Day Logo

Green Valley Y Healthy Kids Day 2017

Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow.

But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. In fact, research shows that kids are prone to gain more weight and fall behind in studies. Every year, the Y will celebrate Healthy Kids Day®, our national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids.

The Y is all about more. The more support, guidance and opportunities we give kids…the more amazing qualities they’ll get out. The more they get out, the more they can achieve growing up. That’s why we provide kids a healthy, caring environment of fun, learning and belonging to help them reach their fullest potential.

And that’s why we celebrate Healthy Kids Day, our biggest day of the year devoted to kids and MORE! Over 1,300 Ys across the country are taking part in Healthy Kids Day, holding free community events that are open to all kids and families and filled with fun, active play and educational opportunities.
